All of us at Chukkerhead are very excited to be involved with the America's Polo Cup charity polo event held on May 8th & 9th of 2009.  We will be debuting our newest clothing items, including an official National Polo League polo shirt in men's and women's styles. We're also introducing our newest Chukkerhead character, who is on a stylishly fun burnout tee.

Wagener resident develops polo line

Brash, bold, impetuous and irreverently optimistic - there's a clothing line that's unmistakably youthful and captures the spirit of the sport of polo. Tom Hopkins has developed a line of polo apparel that's not only practical but also fun. ChukkerHead will be available in the immediate future and should serve as an inspiration to a younger generation of players and fans. The Wagener resident recently shot a photo spread for his new product line, and used the back drop of polo games and Aiken's idyllic scenery to help emphasize his exciting new clothing line. "I came to Aiken to be around the polo community," said Hopkins, who has been a professional photographer for the past 35 years, primarily in the food and fashion industry, although he's only been playing polo for a few years. His goal is to appeal to a younger audience. "We want to make polo more accessible to people, get kids involved, and develop a product that will reach out to more kids. ChukkerHead is 'Polo wear for the irreverent optimist.' We're going to try to reach more people through the clothes line, so they can develop appreciation for the sport."

Hopkins coaches a kids' polo team in Connecticut and appreciates the significant role the Polo Training Foundation and the Work to Ride program play in helping to introduce young people to the sport. Polo as a team sport teaches young people a number of skills that will help them as they go through life, he said. Not only do they learn to be disciplined, but they also learn about responsibility, being responsible to and for the horses, their team, coach and themselves. They also learn to develop respect for the game and sport of polo. "We believe polo is a sport of horses and players, and we intend to take the outreach further and get more people involved," said Hopkins. "The high school kids who are playing polo have a high regard and respect for the game. We're creating backyard polo and making the game more approachable and accessible."

The opportunity to serve as his own client for the first time in his career allowed Hopkins to be part of the process and the end product, and he found it to be challenging, having to critique his own work. Hopkins, the owner of Tom Hopkins Studio in Madison, Conn., strives to turn out the best product, with the hope that the final result meets everyone's expectations. The clothing line, which has been influenced by his wife and children, will also feature a tie-dye polo shirt, he said. "The kids love the tie-dye; it's become really popular again. We're adding a number of ideas to the traditional polo look," said Hopkins, who will be dedicating a part of the proceeds from Chukker Head to educating and introducing young people to polo. "It's going to be a fun thing, educational and entertaining."

Chukker Head polo wear will soon be available online and at a number of polo venues throughout the year, said Hopkins, with his hope to have the apparel available at the Palermo Open in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The website will also feature a blog, featuring stories from the different communities Chukker Head visits, he said.
